West Wales

The holiday west. Pembrokeshire brings the headline beaches and the coast path — Tenby's harbour, Barafundle, the Blue Lagoon at Abereiddi — plus Britain's smallest city at St Davids and puffin season on Skomer. Carmarthenshire is its quieter warm-up act: castles, market towns and the long sands of Carmarthen Bay.

Getting there: the A48 and A40 carry on where the M4 gives up, and the rail line runs to Carmarthen, Tenby and Pembroke Dock. In summer, the far west rewards early starts — the best car parks by the famous beaches fill by mid-morning.
